Discover the Colourful World of Natural Stone

NATURAL STONE

When you are in charge of a project, one of the most important decisions is choosing the colour and type of stone to cover both interior and exterior spaces.

Nature has created different shades of stone depending on the mineral substances mixed over millennia—without artificial substances—from cool tones, such as blues and greens for large spaces, to warm tones, such as reds, yellows, and browns for cosy environments.

But what are the types of stone and the origin of their shades?
Read a summary below.

Granite, cobblestones.

Granite

Do you think granite is only the type with little dots? It is true that this is a classic type of granite that is still used today. But granite goes beyond that, as there are also very versatile types of granite with avant-garde nuances:

From light greys, through splendid blues, greens, reds and browns, to more opaque blacks.

Its hardness stands out, which is why it is one of the favourite natural stones for kitchen worktops and flooring.

Limestone

Limestone exudes elegance and uniformity in any space thanks to its warm Mediterranean colours. The original colour of limestone is white, but nature has created various shades, such as cream, brown, grey and yellow, among others.

A favourite among builders and architects for its thermal resistance, limestone is suitable for both outdoor and indoor spaces with a variety of finishes, including bush-hammered, aged, flamed, sandblasted, polished, honed, or natural.

For this reason, our projects in Spain, where temperatures can reach up to 47º, are made with various types of limestone, such as Gris Zarci, Crema Niza, Crema Marfil, or the Mallorcan Piedra de Binissalem, to name a few.

Travertine, Natural Stone

Travertine

Travertine, a type of limestone, radiates beauty. Along with marble, travertine was used by the Romans to showcase their grandeur, as they employed this material for statues, floors, columns, baths, and ornaments. Today, it is a favourite stone, which, when combined with modern furniture, creates a subtly elegant atmosphere.

At STONE-WORLD MALLORCA, we provide Turkish, Spanish and international travertine in a wide range of sizes, finishes, and shades—beige, yellow, grey, red, and brown.

Marble

Marble – especially Carrara marble – was also well known among the ancient Romans and Greeks for its aesthetic appeal.

It is characterised by its vivid colours: a range of uniform, mottled, veined or various combinations of blue, grey, red, yellow, black, green and brown tones.

In fact, this natural stone—whether polished, honed or aged—continues to be the preferred choice for adding personality and luxury to interior spaces.

Slate

Opaque satin finish, with fine layers and medium to dark grey, green, purple, brown and black colours, slate seduces with its rustic and elegant charm.

Slate is a material that builders normally use on roofs, façades, garden paths, tables and worktops. It is also a good alternative for creating modern-style swimming pools.

Sandstone

Sandstone is formed from layers of compacted sandy sediments. Traditionally, most Mallorcan houses have been clad with sandstone from the region, known as marés.

The best-known types of sandstone in Mallorca come from Santanyí, Felanitx and Porreres. To this day, this material is used for walls and vaults, some with grains and molluscs embedded in them, and offers an original, natural colour, sometimes reddish in appearance.

Quartzites

Quartzite

Like granite, quartzite is one of the hardest natural stones on earth, as this material is mainly composed of quartz. It has a noble appearance with a wide range of colours, such as white, cream, tan, ochre, grey, green and black, suitable for an urban, modern or luxurious style.

Quartzite is, in fact, one of the most widely used materials for kitchen worktops, whether matt, polished or aged, thanks to its durability and decorative beauty.

Volcanic Stone

This type of natural stone from the island of Java in Indonesia have become the material of choice for aquatic structures due to their green-blue hues.

Sukabumi and Bali Green stones come from Southeast Asia and are produced in limited quantities. Both materials are durable and non-slip, whether dry or wet, for added safety.
